Keynote Speaker 

              

Ian H law M.D. is Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine and the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City Iowa.  He also holds the Children’s Miracle Network Professorship Chair of Pediatrics at Iowa. Ian grew up in the Midwest in a family with 7 children in 8 years (an identical brother accounts for some of it), an experience for which he attributes his interest in pediatrics. He received both his B.S.E. (Biomedical Engineering) and M.D. from the University of Iowa. He completed his residency in Pediatrics, his Pediatric Cardiology fellowship and Electrophysiology fellowship at Michigan from 1993 - 2000. He joined the University of Iowa immediately thereafter where he has directed the Pediatric Electrophysiology Program. In 2010 he was appointed clinical professor and in 2013 he was appointed Director of Pediatric Cardiology at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. He has received several teaching awards both at Michigan and Iowa.

Dr. Law's research focuses on the management of arrhythmias in children and adults with congenital heart disease. Specifically, this is includes the diagnosis and management of supraventricular and ventricular arrhythmias. He recently completed a long-term study regarding arrhythmias in patients following the Fontan operation supported by the American Heart Association. Research studies have investigated safety and efficacy of anti-arrhythmic therapy, surgical arrhythmia options, ablation procedures, and device therapy (pacemakers, implantable cardioverter defibrillators).  Dr. Law is also involved in projects that evaluate the psychosocial outcomes of device therapy.  Dr. Law has 57 peer-reviewed publications regarding cardiac arrhythmia and device management in children, 18 book chapters and numerous abstracts. Given his engineering background, he is a frequent consultant and resource to industry regarding the application of cardiac devices to children.

Dr. Law has served in regional and national for leadership positions. He has been a member of the Midwest Pediatrics Cardiology Society Board. Most recently he has served as Vice-President, then President  of the Pediatric and Congenital Electrophysiology Society(PACES); he currently serves as  the immediate past president for a two-year term.
